There is no doubt that science and technology are fully embedded in and our world; they drive it. And what allows these technical innovations and inventions to come to fruition is the scientific method. Based on observable evidence, hypothesis are derived which are then statistically validated with a set of examples. If this can be done with enough consistency and predictability, it guides and develops the technologies that allow us to interface with the world.

This deterministic and predefined process is also the approach favored by traditional project management, which advocate an approach that places a priority on gathering and understanding the technical requirements to define the complete system or product ahead of time. Based on this, the idea is that you can predictably develop the system or product within a plan of predefined phases of deliverables and anticipate the realization of the business value associated with those deliverables. In the semiconductor industry for example, the standard approach to process control involves applying predefined mathematical models to define and control the inputs and outputs of a physical system.

Defined processes have worked well to control physical systems such as the manufacturing of semiconductors that have given rise to quality control methods such as Six Sigma, which use rigorous statistical process control to manage …
