Let the Good Times Roll?
Every now and then, that project comes along where everything just seems to go perfectly. It feels like you don’t deserve to be this lucky…you stop off to buy lottery tickets on the way home because you are bound to win the way things are going! (Okay, so it doesn’t happen too often, but every now and then…)
So why am I writing an article that talks about motivating and leading your team when things are going this well? Isn’t that the easiest job in the world? Do you really need an article to tell you how to manage the good times? Let’s explore…
Don’t get carried away
I have a feeling that I am going to sound like a party pooper, but you need to keep a sense of perspective--and make sure that your team maintains a sense of perspective. A project manager that I worked with many years ago used to say that his project team was like a sports team and he was the coach. The project work was the other team and he used to talk in very aggressive terms about “pounding the project into the turf” and “posterizing a task” (I had to Google it too). His teams loved him (it was a young, male-dominated environment) and they would literally be high-fiving one another and telling each other how good they were when things were going well.
