Reporting as a Quick Win: BI and Building Credibility

Craig is based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and has worked with ProjectManagement.com for the last six years developing the various HEADWAY processes (Project, Change and Portfolio). He has hosted a series of webinars and is a business intelligence subject matter expert.

Phil was a learning coordinator working for a large, multinational company. His job was to identify the training requirements of employees and job sites, ensuring they took the right courses at the right time, and confirmed and tracked those training certifications in a Learning Management System. This knowledge was critical to certify that employees who work on a given job site have the right safety training to actually work there.

The company needed to ensure that they met the Federal Department of Labor’s Occupational Health & Safety Association (OSHA) regulations. If the company did not comply with those regulations, they were at risk of being removed from the job sites, having fines imposed or having staff who were at serious risk of being injured (or worse) due to a lack of appropriate training. Phil played a pretty important role in this company.

However, Phil was a very frustrated learning coordinator. Much of his role is spent trying to understand the data that is currently sitting in the company’s LMS system. Instead of running canned reports in the system and spending his time understanding those reports and communicating back to the business, he spent most of his days creating workarounds to manually dump that data into spreadsheets and create his own reports because the reports in the system simply did not work.
