Hi Dave,
I'm not sure about the difference about a GIG and regular discussions, other than limiting or not who can see/participate in such debates. To come up with meaningfull topics that hopefully do not overlap the public discussions I would need to get a bit better understanding of the intent of these groups, beyond "being a forum where people with similar interests can share knowledge" or other general descriptions like this.
I understand that the GIGs are tools that the members have some ability to use them for multiple purposes, but would you be able to share with us what was gantthead's initial intent in introducing them? Maybe this will spark some new thoughts.

Well I have set up the UK PMO GIG to enable UK project and programme people to share some thoughts and network a little, who knows maybe it will lead to some of us getting together for a beer, it will also hopefully lead to experience and knowledge exchange and give people form outside the UK a place to come if they are thinking of working in the UK and want to know what hte local differences are.

I really like the GIG concept. As a Communications Director for a PMI chapter and the founding coordinator for a second one, it is really important to me to have avenues to network and communicate with other project managers and related professionals.
However, I find myself overwhelmed with all the possible communication channels available. I want people to visit my chapter websites for local information, but I also want a forum to share project management best practices, as Gantthead provides.
My conundrum is how to effectively incorporate a GIG (like the Northwest Arkansas PMI Chapter GIG) with a chapter website. I would like to see some discussion around marketing a GIG and ways to incorporate it into other communication channels.
