What are the core roles and responsibility of a Project Management Office?

I think the core responsibilities are :

(1) Defining the project specific templates to be utilized across the organization to feciliate project managers for example - Cost and Budget report, customer status reports, communication sheets
(2) High level data analysis across projects to define the organization benchmark with respect to quality, productivity, efficiency so that new proposals will be prepared based on current competency level.
(3) Approve the new project proposals based on organization strategy and vision.
(4) Work with senior management to define the organization strategy and vision.

There are many more things but above are some critical as per my experience.

Hello,

PMO in a department that defines and maintains the standards of process, generally related to project management, within the organization. The PMO strives to standardize and introduce economies of repetition in the execution of projects. The PMO is the source of documentation, guidance and metrics on the practice of project management and execution.
