Government Lean-Agile

Hi,

I recently ran across the GLASScon conference site (http://glasscon.org/), and started wondering how Government institutions are utilizing Agile methods in project management. It is my understanding that Lean Six Sigma principles are becoming more popular with some Governments, but I would think that Agilists in the Federal world would face some unique challenges, particularly with stakeholder buy-in, and the dynamic nature of iterative product development.

I'm not a Government employee, so I am unable to attend the conference; however, I would be interested in some feedback from anyone who has some insight into Agile in the Government culture. (not to limit the discussion to just the U.S., of course.)

Hi, Andrew!

What was the results and what are your conclusions for today?
I think Agile in Government projects could be efficient only partly (there should be defined certain areas for implementation)

Agile in government is indeed a challenge - the government and public service mind-set just doesn't match well with a process heading to an uncertain destination - it is a hierarchy-driven organisation that likes to state what will happen from on high and then expect this to occur.

There is however space for Agile - maybe not for a whole project, but in a detailed requirements and development phase there is usually enough space to allow some agile approach to function. The problem then is how to report back up on progress, because no elected official will feel comfortable hearing that we are 75% of the way through but not certain what the end point will be, or that the first 50%was prototypes none of which will make it into the final deliverables!
