Learning From Success and Challenges in Change Management

The art and science of change management is becoming a key skillset for project managers to master. As project management matures and individual professionals take on larger efforts, change management skills become vital because leading people will only become more important. Change management is fundamentally a people business that demands outstanding interpersonal skills and the capacity to work through uncertainty.

Consider these observations on the growing importance of change management as a discipline and a profession:

  • There are over 6,000 professionals with change management in their job title on LinkedIn (source: Linkedin advanced search, April 2015)
  • The Association of Change Management Professionals (ACMP), established in 2009, now has over 2,000 members with a mostly executive membership: “Over 80% of ACMP Members indicate they are at Director level or above, with close to 10% holding the title of CEO or President.” (ACMP website)
  • The increasing pace of mergers and acquisitions, especially in the technology industry, is a key driver of change management. For example, Yahoo! acquired over a dozen companies in 2014.
