Business transformation is a subject we continue to hear a lot about, but what does it really mean? More importantly, what does it have to do with project and program management? The term “business transformation” can have a variety of meanings depending on who you’re talking to, but the question of how it relates to PPM was pretty well addressed at this year’s Gartner PPM & IT Governance Summit in Orlando.

In the opening keynote session, Gartner Distinguished Analyst Dale Kutnick provided some fascinating insights into what the world might look like a mere 15 years from now. Highlighting a myriad of external trends—everything from population growth to increased digitalization across all aspects of our lives to the impact of automation and analytics—his presentation offered a glimpse of the many factors that will be driving business transformation in the not-so-distant future.
Many of us are already aware of the blurred lines between the physical and digital worlds – both across the enterprise and within PPM. But according to Gartner, digitalization is just a waypoint on the ultimate journey toward an autonomous business in which powerful algorithms are used to drive improved business decisions.
