Accessibility Is the Law...How Can Project Managers Respond?
Legislation across the globe is mandating that states, countries, and public and private sector businesses include accessibility requirements in their environments. From built environments to digital channels and platforms (such as websites, mobile, smart homes and smart cities), accessibility is now expected.

- The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) has been signed by more than 170 countries around the world. Under article 9, the Convention requires countries to identify and eliminate obstacles and barriers, including information and communications technologies.
- The American Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act ensure that all people have equal access to goods, services and communications. Section 508 is specific to ICT for U.S. federal government and agency procurement.
- The European Accessibility Act (EAA) requires member states to make a number of products and services accessible to all of its citizens, including smartphones, tablets and computers, online shopping websites and mobile applications.
- The Canada Accessibility Act was signed in July 2019 and affects services and products for all federally regulated organizations in Canada, identifying and removing barriers for persons with disabilities.
