By now we are all immersed in the impact COVID-19 is having on the global health and economy. Technology is playing a vital role in the fight to support the need for protective gear like masks and shields; provide solutions for sterilizing surfaces; and even for paving the way toward finding vaccines. Three of the major technologies that are making a serious contribution to defeating this pandemic are:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Robotics
  • 3D Printing

Below is a synopsis of how these technologies have been deployed.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)
In general, AI is being used to help doctors, researchers and scientists accelerate the diagnostic process, allow for shorter time between model iterations and provide quicker and more reliable predictions. For example, testing for the virus originally took 10 hours to process, but through AI, processing time has been reduced to 10 minutes.

In the effort to discover a treatment for COVID-19, AI was able to evaluate 15,000 drugs in search of potential new variations or even to adapt existing drugs for treatment.

AI also helped scientists discover that the virus can invade brain tissue leading to the loss of taste and smell. It has provided information that the virus might also impact the reproductive system. AI has also been used to analyze scans to help doctors identify patients that are likely to need a …
