Digital transformation (DT) has been gaining in popularity since 2017, according to Google Trends. Like any trending concept, some of you may be inclined to dismiss it as the flavor of the month. The fact that this idea has gained steadily in popularity for more than three years suggests it’s here to stay.

What Is Digital Transformation?
Before we go any further, let's pause for a moment to define the term. According to George Westerman, a research scientist at MIT: "Digital transformation marks a radical rethinking of how an organization uses technology, people, and processes to fundamentally change business performance."

Take note of the key terms in the definition like "radical rethinking" and "fundamentally change business performance." These terms tell us that digital transformation involves taking on risky goals. That's why it is no surprise that 70% of DT projects "do not reach their goals," according to research reported in Harvard Business Review.
