An Automated PMO?

A customer recently contacted me to talk about their new project portfolio management (PPM) solution. They had been looking for a new platform for a while and had just completed the rollout of the software in conjunction with the vendor’s professional services team.

He was delighted that they now had full integration with financial and HR systems; that they could connect investment work from planning and funding through delivery and benefits management; and that they could get a single view into all the work that was happening regardless of whether it was being delivered as traditional, agile or hybrid. He was also excited to see how the integration with their business intelligence (BI) platform would help them with their reporting and analysis capabilities.

Today’s PPM solutions really are amazing things; if you haven’t looked at them in a while, I encourage you to do so. But that’s not what this article is about. It was the question that this customer asked me that I want to explore in this article: Would they be able to use the PPM platform to automate their PMO? And of course, when he said “automate,” he really meant “eliminate”—replacing the function with the reporting capabilities of the PPM solution and their BI tool.
