PMI’s Practice Guide in Business Analysis

Categories: Business Analysis

As planned before the close of 2014, PMI has published its first global standard in business analysis.  Complementing the launch of the PMI-PBASM certification in September, Business Analysis for Practitioners: a Practice Guide, further builds out PMI’s resources in the business analysis and requirements space. This practice guide provides a very thorough look at business analysis by presenting the tasks, knowledge, and skills that are utilized to conduct this important work. Leveraging the extensive research from the role delineation study completed for PMI in 2013 as well as the experience of a number of industry thought leaders and experts in the field, this practice guide delivers a wealth of proven and common practices to help organizations and practitioners apply business analysis successfully.

This practice guide presents the work of business analysis across 5 domains; Needs Assessment, Business Analysis Planning, Requirements Elicitation and Analysis, Traceability and Monitoring, and Solution Evaluation. Content is provided in a straightforward and clear manner, accompanied by examples throughout, which demonstrate the concepts visually.  The guide is valuable to anyone who performs business analysis, works or employs business analysts, starting out in the profession, or building upon their existing knowledge of the practice. Additionally, for those interested in pursuing the PMI-PBASM certification, the practice guide now serves as an additional reference to help prepare for the exam.

The Business Analysis for Practitioners: a Practice Guide  will be available to the community for free download for six months.  PMI membership is not required to download the guide.  Download a copy today and begin your journey to better business analysis!

Could the BA Practice Guide be viewed like am PMI-BABOK? Contains anything needed to know for passing the exam? Or does the exam cover topics which are nowhere explained or denoted in the BA Practice Guide?

Hi Stefan. The PMI-PBA is an experienced based exam. That means that you will draw from your own knowledge base, applying your knowledge from past projects and years of BA experience to answer the questions. With that said, most BAs are not 'proficient' in all areas of business analysis and not proficient with all techniques. To brush up on your skills, definitely take a look at the practice guide. Also, consult the list of references identified on the downloadable reference sheet accessed from the PMI-PBA page on Do you have to read all those! Choose any that have content that helps you fill in the gaps where you feel your knowledge is not strong. I do think the BA practice guide is a nice first step. Hope this helps.

Hi Laura,
Where can I get "Business Analysis for Practitioners: a Practice Guide" book from?

Here you go, Rajinder:

It's on my reading list. Right after I finish "Requirement Management: A Practice Guide", also from PMI.

Thanks Stephane for assisting Rajinder. Can''t wait to hear your feedback.

Thanks for sharing
