Getting PMI CAPM® Certified in 5 Steps! - Updated!

5 Steps Guidance to becoming CAPM® Certified

Regardless of your career stage, the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® is an asset that will distinguish you in the job market and enhance your credibility and effectiveness working on — or with — project teams.

Organizations with standardized practices attain better results, as shown in our 2015 Pulse of the Profession® report. Because the CAPM® recognizes your knowledge of the profession’s preeminent global standard, you’ll stand out to employers and be poised to move ahead.

Project management is a rapidly growing profession. Through 2020, 1.57 million new jobs will be created each year and qualified practitioners are in demand. With the CAPM, you’ll be on the fast track to opportunity.

Who Should Apply?

If you’d like to manage larger projects and gain more responsibility or add project management skills into your current role, then the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) is right for you.

CAPM Exam Guidance

To earn your Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® certification, you need to meet the experience and education requirements, and pass the CAPM® examination, a 150-question, multiple-choice test.

Regardless of how advanced your project experience or education might be, you should still prepare vigorously for the exam. Successful CAPM® candidates typically use multiple study aids — including courses, self-study and study groups — and will spend many hours to prepare, so make sure you leave yourself plenty of preparation time before you take the exam.

Step 1: Get familiar with the basic resources and create your own study plan:

Develop a study plan and dedicate a regular time to study.

If you want to pass the CAPM exam, you will need to have a plan to study in manageable chunks and establish discipline to follow through on the plan. The study plan includes what you are studying, how much time you plan to spend per day, what topics you plan to cover, and what materials you will use.

Make sure you have time to change your plan based on practice test results. For example, if you scored low in risk and procurement management topics on a practice test, you should change your study plan to emphasize those knowledge areas to bring yourself up to speed.

Whether you are self-studying or participating in a class, you need to be able to devote time to regular study in order to be adequately prepared for the exam. We have found that many CAPM test candidates do not need a boot camp, but it is vital that you are adequately prepared before you sit for the exam.

Step 2: Start with PMBOK® Guide - but be prepared to move beyond

Any CAPM candidate needs to read (and study) the PMBOK® Guide at least once, if not twice. The PMBOK® Guide is the primary source for exam questions, so you need to be familiar with it. Second, reading the PMBOK® Guide all the way through gives you more knowledge about its structure, which will help you look up key topics later on. If you need a copy of the PMBOK® Guide, you can purchase one at PMI’s store. If you are a member of the Project Management Institute (PMI)®, you also get a free digital copy.

On your first time through the PMBOK® Guide, we recommend reading and taking notes on a maximum of one knowledge area per day. At this pace, you will get a quick overview of processes and learn more about how the guide works. After you are more familiar with the PMBOK® Guide, you can go back through and take more detailed notes in order to develop a greater understanding.

Please find some further guidance on how to work with and through the PMBoK Guide effectively in this article: ☛ "How To Get CAPM® Certification Using Four Study Techniques"

Review the latest edition of A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) (☛ https://goo.gl/DCNxPQ )

Study additional sources to supplement the PMBOK® Guide.

Only a few books devoted to CAPM exam prep have been updated for the PMBOK® Guide Fifth Edition. One such resource is Rita Mulcahy’s CAPM® Exam Prep, Third Edition by RMC Learning Solutions. This book combines full knowledge area coverage with practice questions and innovative ways to reinforce your understanding of inputs, tools and techniques, and outputs (ITTOs). Another useful resource is CAPM®/PMP® Project Management Certification All-In-One Exam Guide, Third Edition by Joseph Phillips. Although it covers the PMP exam as well as the CAPM exam, it has been updated for the PMBOK® Guide Fifth Edition.

If you come across a source that tells you there are topics you will not need to know for the exam, make a note to study these topics later. This practice will help you in two ways. First, if the topics do appear on the exam as regular or pretest questions, you will know the answer, which will boost your confidence. Second, you will almost certainly need to know the topics for the Project Management Professional (PMP)® exam later. Choose a time after you have completed the basics of your study to revisit these topics and you will set a foundation for future success.

Here are our recommendations (in no particular order!):

Step 3: Took a CAPM preparation course and get your required 23 contact hours of project management training.

Here are our recommendations for some good course options (in no particular order!):

(since such things are not allowed here please go to

5 Steps Guidance to becoming CAPM® certified

For the full version of this guide where it was published first time and where it will be actualized and enhanced whenever necessary. Thanks!)

Step 4: Finalize your preparation by utilizing a CAPM Simulator!

Take practice exams and note where you struggle.

Consider the following when looking for practice exams:

  1. Do you get a rating of how you did in each area? PMI provides you this rating when you finish your actual exam. Any area where you score Low Proficient needs more attention.
  2. Do the answers give you references to the PMBOK® Guide? Looking up these references is a good habit because you get immediate feedback about how to get the question right next time.

Manage your practice exams by keeping the following factors in mind:

  • If the questions don’t change, then don’t take the exam more than twice. After two passes through, the exam is of less value because you remember too much. If a resource’s exam questions are drawn at random from a database, you can probably take it more than twice without significant repeat of questions.
  • Aim for a score of 75+ percent. If you can achieve this score consistently in every NEW mock exam you take, you should feel confident in passing your real exam.

Quiz yourself using a CAPM Exam Simulator, flashcards and study tables, review your notes from course and take lots of practice exams.

CAPM® Exam Simulator

Anytime. Anywhere. Any Device. Best Simulator for the CAPM Exam

Prepare for and feel 100% confident to pass your Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® Exam by using The CAPM® Exam Simulator.

The simulator gives you access to 750 realistic CAPM exam sample questions (5 exams) in an online environment. Question difficulty and style is very close to any question that you will encounter on your actual exam. A team of certified project managers not only developed all questions to be as close to the real things as possible, but they are also updated them to the latest CAPM Exam Content Outline as well as the most recent PMBOK® Guide.

… and it's the only simulator that offers Live Feedback™!

(since such things are not allowed here please go to

5 Steps Guidance to becoming CAPM® certified

For the full version of this guide where it was published first time and where it will be actualized and enhanced whenever necessary. Thanks!)

Step 5: Take the exam and earn your CAPM®!

Manage your time and confidence during the exam.

Managing your time and confidence during the exam gives you the best chance to succeed. Don’t spend too much time on any one question. We recommend spending no more than 30 seconds on a question during the first round, and marking any for review that take longer to complete. When you’ve completed your first round, you can then go back and spend more time on the marked questions. Give yourself a minute for these, and then as a final pass, take your best guess or employ some kind of strategy (like putting all answers as B or C) on any that are still blank. Never leave a question blank. There’s no penalty for guessing, but any blank question is 100 percent wrong.

There are several strategies you can use to manage your confidence. Remember to smile, as it will encourage you to relax, and take short mental breaks with the time you save using your time management strategy. Remember not to get stressed out if there’s one really hard question. It could be one of the pretest questions. Just mark it and move on.

All the best!

We hope that by following these tips and tricks, you will be able to obtain your CAPM® certification. Passing this exam helps you clear a large hurdle and shows your competence and commitment to project management.

Do you have any other concerns going into your CAPM® exam? If you’ve passed the exam, what other tips have you found useful? Please let us know in the comments.

Getting PMP® Certified in 5 Steps

The best way to prepare for PMP is to follow our “5 Step Guidance” for becoming a PMP:

Getting PMP® Certified in 5 Steps:

PMI Project Management Professional (PMP)® Certification

The Project Management Professional (PMP)® is the most important industry-recognized certification for project managers.

You can find PMPs leading projects in nearly every country and, unlike other certifications that focus on a particular geography or domain, the PMP® is truly global. As a PMP, you can work in virtually any industry, with any methodology and in any location.

The PMP can also provide a significant advantage when it comes to salary and earning potential. Among survey respondents to PMI’s Earning Power Salary Survey, (https://goo.gl/1KDfHb ) those with a PMP certification garner a higher salary (20% higher on average) than those without a PMP certification.*

Employers benefit as well. When more than one-third of their project managers are PMP-certified, organizations complete more of their projects on time, on budget and meeting original goals. (Pulse of the Profession® study, PMI, 2015.) (https://goo.gl/bpPSLr )

The PMP signifies that you speak and understand the global language of project management and connects you to a community of professionals, organizations and experts worldwide. Become a PMP and become a project hero.

Here are the steps how to:

Step 1: Learn about PMP® Certification and apply

Step 2: Get started with your PMP® certification preparation. Make a plan! Read the PMBOK Guide, a good PMP prep book (in companion) and use other recommended resources:

STEP 2.1: Make a plan

  • Create Your PMP Study Plan - The Complete Guide

This article shows you how to create your very own study plan based on lessons learned of thousands of students!
  • Enroll in our “Project Manager’s PMP Exam prep guidance”-program!

As an alternative to create your own study plan, why not using ours! We have created a guidance program which will guide you through the complete preparation process in a structured and professional way! And the best – it is completely for REE! No cost and no risk for you. You can start and cancel at any time. You may have a look here:

STEP 2.2: Get the PMBoK Guide PLUS a good prep book (at least one) and work through them thoroughly

As a PMI member you will have access to a digital and personalized version of the actual PMBoK Guide version. Otherwise you need to buy a paper based version.

  • PMBOK Knowledge Areas for Project Management Guide 5th Edition - Process Groups and Processes - The Complete Guide

Here are some additional article regarding this topic:

---------------------------

STEP 2.3: Choose additional prep material and resources based on your personal learning preferences and behaviors

There are tons of resources available out there. Don’t get confused and mislead about it. Think about your personal learning preferences and choose the material that fits to them. Do not choose too many resources and get overwhelmed! Sometimes more is less.

For some guidance about this topic please refer to the following article:

The 12 Most Popular PMP Study Materials for your PMP Exam Preparation

http://goo.gl/x22lDd

Step 3: Took a PMP® preparation course (live or online) and get you’re required 35 contact hours of PM training.

You should already read about it here (refer to step 1 of this 5 step guide):

  • PMP® Requirements – 35 contact hours (The Complete Guide to PMP 35 Contact Hours of Project Management Education )
    http://goo.gl/dTL5i2

Next question you have to answer yourself: “Should I go by a live class/bootcamp or is it better to use a online course for self-learning (or something in between …)?!

Once again, this depends on your very own learning preferences and behaviors. Some of us do need a teacher in front of us and others prefer to learn completely by their own.

Step 4: Finalize your preparation: Utilize a professional online Exam simulator. Analyze and enhance your results. Use flashcards and study tables, review your notes from class and take lots of practice exams.

  • Practice, practice, practice – cause practice is the key!

We can’t underline that more! And we would recommend NOT ONLY doing as much sample questions as you can, cause practice is the key!

Furthermore you should go for really SIMULATING the exam.
It is not an easy job to do 200 (more or less difficult) Questions in a time frame of 4 Hours.
Those 4 Hours could get really long and/or you could run out of time in case you will hang on to long to one very difficult/complex question for instance.

So, you should train your time management for the exam also.

You can do so with those tons of free sample question available on the internet, but in our experience, a professional tool which provides you exactly the exam circumstances, is much better for this.
Yes, it may take a little invest, but from our point of view and our experience this is priceless.

Step 5: Take the exam and earn your PMP®!

If you have done all those steps you should really be well prepared for the exam! Here are some final tips and recommendations for you:

Your timeline to become a PMP in 2017 - before the exam will change in 2018!

As you may know the PMP Exam will change in the beginning of 2018 based on the upcoming sixth Edition of the PMBoK Guide (release is planned in Q3/2017; for details about the upcoming changes please refer to this article: PMBOK® Guide 6th Edition will be released in Q3/2017 - what will change? - UPDATED! ).

If you plan to become a PMP in 2017 you should assure to obtain this certification towards the end of 2017! You may ask yourself "why that? What is the reason for this pressure?". Well, the changes coming with the new PMBoK Guide Edition will be significant and so the PMP exam changes (the new PMP exam is expected to become valid in the Beginning of 2018!) will be significant too.

We all know that the preparation for the PMP exam needs time and dedication and if you do prepare based on the actual prep material available (which is all based on the actual 5th Edition of the PMBoK Guide!) then you need to assure to obtain the credential toward the end of 2017 and before the new exam will be in place, right?!

Of course all the providers for the PMP preparation material will update their materials to be aligned to the 6th Edition of the PMBoK Guide, but like we know from the past it will take some time for those updates and we can expect that the new courses/simulators/books/flash cards and so on will not be completely ready in time. Some may need towards the mid of 2018 to completely align their materials to the new PMP Exam version. This can cause you to start your preparation later in 2018 then you might have planned to.

The generic timeline in our picture at the top of this article shows you an example of a rough study plan and it shows you also, that you should not loose any time to start your preparations know!

Yes, there is some time buffer involved, but you will need this, trust us!

Well, a wise man said sometimes: "Always start with the end in mind!" and so let's do it this way:

 Exam Date:

While creating this timeline we had assumed that you want to have the option for using all of the offered three attempts (of course we hope that you just need the first try but you will never know). This is also kind of a backup plan in the case you may fail the first or even the second try.

Between the exam dates we have 4 weeks left to re-focus and additional practicing. Of course we could shorten this time frame later when the available time is getting short. But from our perspective there should be at least 2 weeks between the trys.

Ok, now let's switch back to the start of your PMP journey.

First of all you should

prepare your learning environment:

You should take your PMP preparation as a project on it's own and as you are a professional already (otherwise you wouldn't fulfill the PMP Exam requirements, right?) you should be professional here as well. That means that you would prepare your learning environment and create all the preconditions (including your personal learning strategy!) for a successful undertaking.

You can find detailed instructions and guidance for creating your learning environment within the first section of our "let me be your PMP prep guide"-program.

If you do not want to participate in the complete program you could alternatively download the Section 1 out of the program from here (of course for free!):

 > Download Section 1 <

If you have finished this task you will

start your preparations (KA1 - KA10):

Now you will start deep diving into the several "knowledge areas" (KA's) mentioned in the PMBoK Guide and your prep books. Of course you could follow the PMBoK Guide structure here (and most PMP exam prep books are structured in the same way), BUT we would highly recommend NOT to start with "Project Integration Management" (what would be the first KA in the PMBoK Guide!

In our "let me be your PMP prep guide"-program we do follow another sequence and we do also explain why this makes a lot more sense from our perspective (but in the end it is your personal decision of course!).

To support your studying you should utilize a complementary training course which will also help you to fulfill the PMP exam application requirement regarding the 35 "contact hours"!

You can do this either by joining a live class/boot camp or alternatively by using one of the available online training courses (mostly much more less expensive than live classes!)

Here are some recommendations for such online training courses:

Prep Cast:http://goo.gl/KUPFBG
Izenbrigde PMP Course: http://goo.gl/9kjrXK

If you have worked through all the content you should start

intensive practicing:

We can't underline this more: The key to PMP exam success is: practice, practice and practice! And to maximize your chance to succeed we do always strongly recommend using a professional online exam simulator. Yes, this may need to invest some bucks, but this will definitely pay off, trust us. We know this from our own experience!

Of course you should also practicing while working through the several KA's (i.e. by doing the end of chapter questions provided in every good prep book). But know is the time to really simulate the PMP exam situation. This does mean that you should do several (at least three!) full timed and full loaded exam simulations (200 Questions/4 hours).

And professional online exam simulators are designed and optimized to do exactly this!.

By utilizing such a simulator (or may be even two different ones) you will be able to assess your exam readiness by analyzing your mock exam results intensively (and those simulators will provide you the tools for this analysis!).

Here are our recommendations for the best available PMP exam simulators available out there:

PS: This post and of course the timeline will be updated on a regular basis over the course of 2017; at least monthly.
