A PM that worked extremely hard was recently let go. Should I be concerned?

I'm a PM for a company who's executives are very much out to protect themselves. An extremely hard-working PM was let go because the people above him that made costly mistakes would admit their faults and take the blame. The PM was the scapegoat. Yes, I know this for a fact. Should I be concerned?
