From Project Manager to Business Analyst
Network:1294

As we all know, there is no need to be able to relatively monitor business processes and operations in some way. But my question is what skills a project manager must develop to become a great business analyst?

Actually, as a business administrator, my point of view is that a person who has the knowledge of project management could improve his/her business skills saliently by pursuing Strategic Management and Marketing management fields. Also having a view of economics, both macro and micro, would be productive.

The key skill is in the name: analysis. As a project manager, we may be called to do some analysis but more often than not we rely on others to do it.

Analysis includes SWOTs, feasibility studies, benefit/costs and gaps, to name a few. It requires good listening, interviewing and facilitating skills to elicit and capture requirements.

Great point Stephane. In fact, business analysis requires effectively SWOTS, feasibility studies, benefits/costs and gaps, very well said. But I believe as Mostafa said earlier that economic knowledge both macro and micro would also be productive.

In my twenty years of project management, I have seen industry knowledge prized in business analysts, not strategic nor economic experience.

Of course, it depends on the business analyst you talk about. I usually refer to a specialist that bridge the business and the product, service or result.

There are lots of tools and techniques that a business analyst may need to apply. You better make a distinction between being a project manager and business analyst. Yes, they are related to each other, but if you wana be a good business analyst, you should focus on its requirements as mentioned by others as well.

Hi Abolfazi Yousefi, we must focus on requirements in order to become a good business analyst. Thank you so much for sharing.

Business Analyst must let her/his clients fly. Business Analyst must demonstrate to their stakehodler that "all your dreams becomes true". Project Manager must make her/his clients land to earth. That is the only thing you have to take into account to understand the diffrerence between both roles.

Hi Sergio, you're providing there a too much philosophical contribution. I need you to be more explicit to allow an easy understanding of what you're saying. What do you really mean by that?

A good BA should be well rounded.

I see the broad usage of the term "business analyst" to be equivalent to "systems engineer" except where the BA primarily addresses business requirements and how a product/project provides utility to the business, the SE primarily addresses technical requirements and how the product provides utility to the customer. The BA is really a SE, but the system of interest is the business system more than the product itself.

In both cases, the product knowledge helps define the value of the goods or services provided, both in what is delivered to the customer, and the difficulty in providing it. Microeconomics also helps understanding both the value to the customer's business, and the value to the business providing service to the customer. Macroeconomics helps understand the environment or market. Many of the tools are even the same, such as flow diagrams for business processes and system level processes.

As the knowledge areas overlap, understanding each helps the BA (or SE) align their work to the desired values and make better decisions.
