Project Management professionals use different methodologies to execute different kind of projects, Agile/ Scrum method for Adaptive Projects, mostly Software Development Projects. A Waterfall, Traditional Plan Driven Method for an Engineering, Infrastructure Development Projects. There are also Popular Continuous Improvement, Human-Centric Solution-Based Methodologies to achieve Break Through Improvements and Innovative Solutions.
Every Project Management Methodology provides guidelines on project execution which are followed diligently to achieve targeted Results. A Question has been raised in my thoughts, these Methodologies that are followed, can they be merged to achieve better results. Can PMP Water Fall and Six Sigma be merged? Can Agile and Design Thinking be merged? Can the Advantages of the methods so merged be clubbed to increase the benefits, would the disadvantages of the methods merged be eliminated?
While these are the questions that tingle around, it is quite evident these Methods have few tools/elements in common which are utilized as stressed E.g.: i) A QFD Tool used in Collect Requirements to ascertain Scope in PMP is used in Six Sigma to Evaluate a new product Development, ii) A Time and Motion Study conducted in Six Sigma Projects are similar to the Observation Studies in PMP for collecting the Requirements to ascertain Scope, iii) A Pugh Concept Design is similar to Solution Proto Typing in Design Thinking iv) A Value Stream Mapping is similar to the Three Point Estimate to Estimate Schedule in PMP
I feel we can Intermingle Project concepts for efficient and effective project execution. let’s call this mashup a “CONNEXION Methodology” from my knowledge of PMP, Six Sigma and Design Thinking, making an effort to handshake between them. Every Methodology has different Project Management Life Cycle: i) PMP – Initiate, Plan, Execute, Monitor & Control, Close ii) Lean Six Sigma – Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, Control iii) Design Thinking – Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test.
Initiating Phase of Water Fall/Plan driven Method has two processes to be followed i.e., Create Project Charter and Identify Stakeholders, to systematically bring in precision and improve efficiency avoid rework in conducting these two processes, lets handshake PMP and Six Sigma Methodologies. That is taking advantages of Six Sigma concepts and tools to execute the Initiating Phase
(i) Define: Business Case, Timelines, Scope, Cost, Objectives, Goals.. we could use a Thought Process Map
(ii) Measure: Evaluate the accuracy of Stake holders Identified by Implementing SIPOC, Measure Business Goals to be achieved by conducting Measurement System Analysis
(iii) Analyse: Are the Stake holders Identified/categorized accurately as per their Power and Interest/Influence Matrix by using SIPOC
(iv) Improve: Identify the Risks involved when a key stakeholder is omitted and craft solutions to systematically follow, involve all Stakeholders also plan communications model, FMEA could be a good tool
(v) Control: Ensure Solutions implemented is sustained to ensure all steps are performed to achieve the Initiation Phase of the Project with high precision, without any errors and rework, of course with a Control Chart

To create Value in the eyes of the Customer i.e., improve effectiveness and bring in more accuracy lets handshake PMP and Design Thinking to perform the Initiating Phase of the Systems & Service Industry Project/Development Life Cycle i.e., to conduct Create Project Charter and Identify Stakeholders processes
(i) Empathize: Understand the Problem/Intent, deeply study the Market, Research for Tacit and Latent Knowledge
(ii) Define: Write the Problem Statement with How Might We.. For…, Empathy Map Techniques
(iii) Ideate: Using Mind Mapping, Story Boarding, Context Diagram to identify all Potential Stakeholders
(iv) Prototype: Explore Future experience, Investigate/prototype its benefits before the Projects begins, to avoid losses/rework if any, achieve early feedback
(v) Test: Evaluate Rigorously with stakeholders
These are few simple and generic examples, however, there can be a handshake of Methodologies in different combinations depending upon the Projects and to take advantage of their concepts, achieve Efficient and Precise results ....
