Ideas for Academic Paper
Network:1764

To fulfill certain requirements associated with teaching in a university, I am looking for ideas to publish/present a paper in an Academic conference (slightly different from Practitioners' conferences).

I will have a University Structure and potential partners to work with. But need new ideas on topics. Could be related to Project, Project, or Portfolio Management in organizations. What do YOU want to see some research about?

I searched on "Papers" in PM Central. I did see some related questions that others have posted (though not very recently), but not a lot of answers. Hence posting again.

My recommendation is that you try a subject that you have experienced in any facet of your life, maybe you consider it trivial but when you stop to study it you will discover that it is really interesting. Then it comes into play to relate that topic to an area of knowledge that you are passionate about.

I Agree with Emyra that having passion on a topic can boost you in having better results

You'll also discover flaws and it'll give you a chance to improve on the flaw.

A couple of topics that come to mind:

1. Project Management vs Program Management. When to choose one over the other, what have organizations implemented and why, successes and failures.
2. Project schedules and why large (Billion $ plus) projects are always over budget and behind schedule. (e.g. Ottawa's Light Rail System is 400 days behind schedule, and still counting, and over budget by CAN$1B). Why has PM not solved this major problem?

3. The PM paradox and why senior management fears PM. Projects typically begin with a rough order of magnitude budget and schedule which routinely has no basis on a rigorous analysis. Unfortunately, this budget and schedule form the "tone" and set managements expectations going forward. Typically, much later a more in-depth analysis is completed by the PM staff, which shows the original budget and schedule are not realistic and achievable, but senior management does not want to hear any of it. In short, little to no effort is spent up front completing a rigorous analysis which inevitably leads to all other manner of issues which could have been avoided if simple PM was applied.

I highly agree with you Steve especially on the 2nd topic, billions of dollars are lost every year in Mega projects, eventhough that in some rare cases as the sydney opera house the project was over budget and behind schedule and still considered by the stakeholders a success but that shouldn't be the case

it is hard to say. You better find something that you find helpful. I believe it is not like "ok let's start researching about X".

What kind of academic conference are you attending, Samuel? What requirements are you looking to fulfill?

This is one example. https://mbaainternational.org/wp-content/u...ail-version.pdf

Overall, the objective I am trying to fulfill is to teach part-time, and while some may require a PhD, others require a 'Paper presentation' as a qualification

it depends on your interest, and the issues that you are facing. so , it is better to write something that you are familiar with.

Hi Samuel,
You may consider this: Clarify that meeting and exceeding customer expectation will ultimately not result in scope creep or gold platting

One topic that I found to be very interesting is the topic of Knowledge management. Many companies lose miilions of dollars every year due to the lack of a proper knowledge management system in place that can support them when their people/employees start leaving on when the same projects occur somewhere else in the organizations and the same mistakes happen again.
