How can project managers respond to these new challenges?
For some Project Managers it is a paradigm shift in the way they work.
The challenges of the Project Manager profession are immense.
New challenges arise every day that we have to be prepared to face and respond to.
I am convinced that knowing how to do it (project management experience) is very important for the maturity of the Project Management professional.
However, one cannot neglect learning at the level of knowing how to know.

These terms are defined within the job definitions and standards of individual companies.
Page 309 of PMI's Salary Survey (10th edition - https://www.pmi.org/landing/salary-survey-2018) provides some definitions but those aren't objective enough to conclusively grade someone as a PM vs. PM II vs. PM III.
I agree with you. Continuous personal development and learning is integral in taking the next step in any career.
I define seniority in having more than one specialty. In the case of a project manager, the specialties could be industries, products or even methodologies.
Perhaps when she/he is an old man like me....
