What kind of approach do you suggest to project interdependencies management?
On the one hand, it is well known that a multi-business environment can be a really challenging for an effective project portfolio management. On the other hand, companies face the paradox that come from conflicting business aims, such as accelerate to try reach a benefit, and centralize efforts to reduce waste. With that in mind, what could be a good suggestion to manage the natural interdependencies that my be at different levels between the project portfolio elements (e.g. technnical, resources, goals, among others), and between them and other operational activities?

if you are referring to deliverable interdependencies, use of a higher level integrated portfolio schedule can help to capture which projects are depending on which other ones, for what and when.

However, if you are referring to dependencies related to resources (materials/equipment) or people, then an EPM solution of some kind may be needed to visualize the competing draws on these.

Thank you, Kiron. I was thinking on the later one. Just to be sure, what does EPM stand for?

Enterprise project management - for example, Planview, Primavera, MS Project Enterprise and so on.

However, don't let the tool precede establishment of some consistent practices for tracking and reporting otherwise it will be garbage in, garbage out...

A so-called "Lean Portfolio Management" allows to map out the various elements and establish dependencies amongst them, including the enablers. Value drives the priority of items, which should be frequently aligned with the organization mission/vision and strategic goals. I believe that MSP provides tools to assist on implementing this approach.

Project interdependencies must be entered in the portfolio model. They may include dependencies between activities of different projects, project priorities, common resource and financial constraints. Calculating portfolio schedule taking into account all existing constraints we get the plans that take into account project interdependencies.

"It is an important and popular fact that things are not always what they seem. For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much -- the wheel, New York, wars and so on -- whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man -- for precisely the same reasons."
