Scandinavian leadership, a model of success, which is for you the main factor of success?
Most of us know what the characteristics of good leadership are, there are many factors. In the Scandinavian case, three factors stand out in relation to the others:
1 - High level of employee involvement in the decision-making process
2 - short distance between managers and employee
3 - ‘freedom with responsibility’, which means that the employee has ample space in which to take initiative and work independently.

A European study reveals that these factors are more pronounced, contributing to greater efficiency in relation to all other countries.
Do you think this is the result of cultural, educational factors or a greater social awareness?

Those factors certainly increases buy-in, motivation, trust, team work, effective communication.

I think it is a combination of all dimensions you're mentioned: Cultural, Educational and Social Awareness.

However, I believe the team operate with a certain freedom that is guided by organizations limits.

Rami,

Thanks for sharing your opinion. I fully agree with you but sometimes i wonder why is so hard to other organizations adopting good solutions in face of evidences.

Alexandre
I would suggest that it begins with culture which in turn influences the remaining two attributes. Educational factors (if those include what and how kids are taught) would also contribute to greater social awareness.

If I wouldn't be trading one cold climate for another, I'd be tempted to relocate, Alexandre :-)

I think Scandinavian saunas are a wonderful culture.
Everyone may not be able to speak normally, or the sauna may be able to speak.
Having a common environment where everyone can talk without hesitation has many advantages.

HI,

Yes, that right , all culture dimensions which mentioned by you drive them to be a superior management structure (I call it flat structure).
If you search about Hofstede dimensions, you will find (power distance =low, Individualism=high,Gender Differentiation=low and Uncertainty Avoidance =low).
For more details search on (Hofsede,Trompenaars and Meyer) dimensions.

Mansour,

The only way to understand the model is to work for an Scandinabian country. I did that in times where they were the top one in celular technology. When you interact with them, when you understand they points of view because the way of living and thinking then you understand that it is quit impossbile to apply those models in countries that belongs to Latin America or Latin cultures. At the end, start to understand they origins and who they survive along the years. That´s key.

Sergio,

Thank you for sharing your opinion with us, I believe is difficult, very hard to implement but not impossible and yes it must be adapted to the culture it will never be a clone of the Scandinavian model. I could point some cases of success implemented in Portugal ( is a Latin country).
