Lack of marketing is on of the main reasons of failure of startup companies.
Because they do not understand that a project has sense because a solution to a business problem will be created, where solution is equal to "the thing" to be created (product/service/result) plus "the way" to create it (project). Then, a project by itself, has no sense.
It has to do with a lot of factors. Sergio made a good point.

A good market study may make difference in order to determine if a certain product or service will be acquired by the population at determined prices.
Maybe poor marketing, not focused on the proper potential customer market? If you are selling a product, does that product have a market? Is there research to show this demand?
What is the goal of the project? Is the project focused on the proper deliverables, and the proper goal?
