Notable Projects
Hello All,

I am looking for modern day developments, other than the Empire State building where I can read about the project management aspect of it. Already reading about the Giza pyramids to cover the ancient aspect but would like an illustration more recent.

Articles welcomed!

Thanks!

Although expensive, this is a good book which you might be able to find used. If not, you might be able to find which projects are included in the book. I took a grad school course where this was the text for discussing notable successes and failures. A couple that come to mind are the Tylenol poisoning response (success) and the Denver international airport (failure).

If nothing else, it could be a good seed to start a Google search of related information.

Another success story is the Boeing ballistic flight deck door after 9/11. It was probably the fastest design, certification, manufacture, and in-service retrofit in aviation history.

I'd recommend perusing back issues (online) of PM Network as PMI regularly published in depth case studies of some pretty challenging projects ranging from large systems implementations to mega-construction projects.

A number of engineering schools offer post graduate studies in project and construction management. Some of the courses are based on case studies.
I recall my masters program (mid 1980s) at the University of Waterloo here in Ontario had a course called "Mega Projects" which allowed us to review some of the larger construction undertakings in the province.
I suggest you check with some of the local establishments to see what they offer and maybe get some text references.

The PM Network magazine that is issued on monthly basis has some amazing projects. Check previous issues and you will find a lot. I remember there was one specifically for mega projects.

I believe you should look at an old development with a lot of lessons learned

Have you researched for Sydney Opera house project? An iconic global building for Austria in Sydney. With failed project management due to an ineffective project procurement plan, Inadequate resource management, the impact of client's further request during project execution after project scope definition without considering project-based line definition and impact of stakeholders with project management experience.

A project scheduled for four years with a budget of AUS 7million was completed in fourteen years with an overbudget of above 723% increment.

there are many sources describing mega projects post-mortem.

One example is https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/0308518X20958724 looking at Olympic games.

Or regarding construction of landmarks

Interestingly, all those products are regarded as long term successes, while the initial estimates proofed to be wrong.

Thank you! :)
Thomas's suggestion is interesting.
You will likely enjoy Bernstein's Against the Gods.
A nowadays interesting project is the construction of NEOM City, in Saudi Arabia. This city is planned to incorporate ecological and sustainable technologies, using clean energies, and designed specially to coexist with nature.
