How to become a highly recognized PM in an organization?
Network:410

I have taught International Project Management at Master level to students coming from different parts of the world for 14 years. They learn up-to-date project management practices based on the PMI framework and they learn actual PM behaviors by working on concrete projects from my international experiences in the IT industry.
But they need more. Each year some of them ask me the same question: "Knowing PM best practices and appropriate behaviors is OK, but how can we differentiate from other PMs to become highly recognized in the organizations we work for?"

I usually provide answers coming from my own experience:
- Obtain successful achievements with the demonstration you are objectives and results oriented,
- Manage your stakeholders and customers expectations to avoid their disappointment,
- Be open with your teams but drive them without any ambiguity: demonstrate strong leadership and decision-making
- Communicate honestly, accurately and in a timely manner regarding all the project events and status,
- Give visibility to your main actions and results,
- Anticipate, anticipate: apply risk management appropriately and secure stakeholders trust by providing accurate forecasts.

All these students and very junior practioners understand these advises. Of course this list is not exhaustive. What would be your best recommendations to junior PMs who want to be recognized as a "star" PM in their organizations?

If Philippe gives the same advice to everyone and everyone follows his advice, then they will be all the same.

Each person is unique through her experience, governing values, beliefs, and skills. Find out how you stand out from others around you and make it work for you.

For example, my specialty is technical IT project management. I have a strong technical backgrounds in both IT and project management. That allows me to be effective as a business analyst, architect, team lead, resource manager or project manager. No one else in my organization can step into these roles as readily as I can.

Hi Stephane. thank you for your comment. Hopefully uniformity is not a competitive advantage in our profession. Indeed there is no exhaustive standard list of advises or cookbook to become the greatest PM. But if PMs do not show an image reflecting what his/her companies expect from them there won't be any chance they can access to the most interesting, valuable and strategic PM assignments.
I agree with you on an important point for a good reputation: find how you differentiate yourself from the others. This is the way I have managed my PM career as per today.

Hi Philippe, being open with team is very important. i used to work in a very conservative way to achieve targets and apply presure to my team. After i realized that i am not leading the team, as I'm not buying in the team. I faced resistance and misunderstanding with the project team, which caused bad moral for the project. Therefore, I Changed my way of communication and start to open discussion with all team members from sponsors to labour, which gave a better work result & achievements.
opening proper communication channels and becoming a good listener help me a lot being the project star.
Regards,

Hi Philippe, some things that will help to add value to an individual. Its the work performed, and the value presented by the individual that will build their recognition with lots of conversations and engagement, steering with strategic direction, and ensuring Enterprise Architecture is involved in the initiative.

To excel in their organisations PM must have a business acumen - know the income streams of their organisations and think of benefits, business value, strategic fit and take project decisions with one eye on the big picture.

You are right. The sense of the business of the organization you work for is mandatory. In addition PMs are the company representative at project level in front of the Customer.
Thank you for your great input.
