Where can I create a Portfolio of my past Projects that I can showcase?
Network:0

My First Post - Here goes...

I have been a PM for almost 15 years, and I find it hard to keep track of all the projects I have worked on throughout many contracts with various employers. I often envy Graphic Designers with very comprehensive portfolio's of their work. Is there something like this for PM's to document/showcase their work?

Wouldn't it create so much value to document and showcase the different types of projects you have worked on during your career? Resume's are often limited to a few bullet points and it does not do justice to a 1-2 year project. I try to recall the projects I worked on a decade ago but only have blurred memories... I have recently started to maintain a personal archive but it's not easily shareable or showcased well. There is so much to archive and showcase - variety of Scope, Teams, Budgets, Scale, Timelines, Related Artifacts, Special Projects, and so much more...

Is there anything available on the market that can do this?

Thanks !

Hello Naseer,

You may use MS Word to document all your projects. You can change the style & appearance, create custom list and index, etc. and share in word or pdf format.

You may also showcase using Google & Word Press. Both of these have predefined templates.

Try to use Microsoft OneNote ... I really find it very useful.

Hi,

Please give Linked In Profile -- Projects section a try. It not only gives appropriate placeholders to enter details, it also allows you add the people that worked with you on the projects.

Thanks,
Rajan

Thank you for the suggestions. These are very helpful.

I totally agree with Rajan. I've been adding some of my own achievements - blogs, presentations, webinars - on my LinkedIn profile. It's definitely an easy way to set up and share your portfolio.

I agree and I do the same Stephane. It works very well but you can't put every single detail there because it is public so probably with LinkedIn, there should be supplementary source for personal notes which I assume Naseer was asking for.

Great comments...

We currently use our Resume and outline our experience through vague bullet points but in fact our work is very complex and project based. Doesn't it make more sense for our Resume to outline the Projects we manage? i.e. Highlight Projects at a high level, and redirect them to a platform with detailed project information.

Project: Power of Attorney and Joint Accounts (Regulatory)
Summary: Establish Power of Attorney (POA) policy across the company and its affiliates
Budget: $xx M
Duration: xx Months
Highlights – Successfully met Regulatory commitment. Created enterprise-wide solution on a platform that supports iterations. Obtained stakeholder buy-in and ownership of POA.
Challenges – Lack of consistency across LOB’s. No ownership for POA across the company, or stakeholder buy-in. No previous policy, procedure, or content.
Scope: Provided POA information for clients on cibc.com and local branches. Created original policies and procedures for all LOB’s across the Company. Trained all frontline staff (23k) with new POA processes.
CORE Team:13.
Extended Team: 25+
LOB’s:
Vendors:
Output – Webpages, Brochures, Training Modules, Legal Forms, Procedures
PM Docs – Business Case, Project Charter, SOW, Comm. Plan, Roadmap, Stakeholder Analysis, Project Schedule, Process Improvement Plan, BRD, Cost Mgmt. Plan, Risk Mgmt. Plan, Scope Mgmt. Plan, Status Reports, RACI, Lessons Learned, Transition Plan.
Skills Used – MS Office, Project, Visio, Jira,

Once a portfolio is complete, it can output a summary similar to this...

16 Years of Project Management Experience
20+ Projects Managed (avg. duration xx months)
$11M+ Total Budget (avg. $xx)
8 Contracts (avg. duration xx months)

What do you guys think ?

It is not a bad idea but you don't want to mention all details in the resume. Keep it short and simple yet exciting to the extent that it can get you an interview and then you can talk all details there. Just my 2 cents.
