Practice Areas: IT Strategy
Do you (really) benefit from Cloud Solutions?
Network:164

I'd like to ask this question to the project management community both in relation to online tools and IT implementation strategies to see whether indeed our lives are now much simpler and projects are much cheaper using on line resources... Share me your thoughts and experiences using Desktop applications on line or using Cloud for processing power. Thanks!

We use Drop Box for our company operations and it is awesome. You can access all your information from anywhere so yes, this is the same idea as the cloud and it made our life much easier in many ways.

More and more cloud solution are interesting to PM community. Cloud storage is a important one. Some more structure system are very interesting, in construction I have use PlanGrid so you can Identify deficiency directly on the drawing adding common and picture. There is Trello more base on Agile for IT but you can use it anywhere.
Both are at no cost for a certain level of data.

Thank you gentleman for your answers, from these replies I'd conclude you see the cloud mainly for online tools. I would be curious to see whether project managers dealing with technology would consider cloud as a technical solution as well.

I can't imagine using technology without cloud computing. Most of our applications are cloud based.

Here is an article on ‘myths about moving to the cloud’ from Microsoft, hope this gives you additional insights -

More and more of my tools are cloud-based. We offer our product both for on premise use or hosted by us.

As a software vendor, we encourage our clients to use a cloud solution for two main operational reasons. First, our support team can see what you are seeing if there is a problem, and secondly we can ensure that software updates get applied when they should be. Client on premises hosting can make resolving support calls and getting software updates applied much more difficult.

Cloud solution like SharePoint are fundamental in our projects, just to keep planning and documentation available anytime from anywhere is, for me, a huge game changer.

Also there are other simpler tools, like Trello or Slack, that allow agile planning and communication that are usually free and offer nice advantages.

Nowadays, Cloud solution are key for keep a successful communication.

Noemi, more complicated? I was thinking in easier...for example cloud solutions, allow us to share project documentation in an easy way.

Maybe it depends on your role, isn't? It means if you have the "power" to chose the tool in your company, will be more difficult because you'll have each day new options, new technologies...

Maria: Paul was asking about online tools, strategies and cloud solutions. Based on your role in the organization (PM, BA, EA, CTO) my answer would still be yes and no. Your responding to the benefits of these options and solutions and to that I'm in agreement as long as the approach for rolling out the change was the right fit and PM/Sponsor got buy in and engagement. It should be simple, seamless, transparent and should make end users life easier so they can focus on working on key initiatives in their organizations.
