Paid PDU's for keep certification - Worth it?
Network:9605

I've realized that at the moment my certification is in a good shape, I'm not in a hurry to get the 60 PDU's need until my renew.

All the PDU's that I get, was volunteering and webinars. But I've observed that there are a lot of companies that offered the 60 PDU's needed for keeping the PMP certification for X dollars.

Where X is a huge different bracket of prices.

Have you ever paid for keeping your certification? Do you recommend to do it in order to learn a completely new skill as Six Sigma?

I've read that with free PDUs you may not be able to learn any new skill deeply. Is that true? or only advertising that we have to analyze carefully.

Thank you!

@Rami, thank you for your comments.

Do you think that PMP certification will lose the sense of renewal due to all these companies that sell a pack of PDU's that will automatically renew your certificate with a simple download?
If companies strictly sell PDU's directly and those PDU's are not against a course or book or outcome of any educational or giving back activity then of course the PMP and all PMI certifications will lose the sense for renewal because the purpose of the renewal every 3 years is to ensure that professional practitioners are up to date with all PM Practices so if PDU's are offered against money then this does nit make sense.

Maria, are you sure there are companies who just sell PDU's ? Like I can buy 60 PDU's in one day ? Give me an example or share a link.

On another note, Lynda is a website powered by LinkedIn that offers online training courses and so on. Check it out, its very useful:

@Rami, If you are interested in this kind of companies I'll share by private message is easy to google it. I don't want troubles or make publicity to something that from my point of view is not....not... let's say not for people that aren't in a rush or want to learn.

Thank you for this Lynda link, I can see that isn't free. Maybe I'll start the free trial to test if is useful for me.

To add to Anupam, Lynda is great, and was purchased by LinkedIn prior to the LinkedIn acquisition by Microsoft. Now, when you see the suggested content video in your LinkedIn feed, that is leveraging Lynda content.

Lynda is a great resource b/c it has video content on everything.

its part of self education and development , paying for "easy download " just to earn the PDU will not probably gain the value of education and enhance your PM skills , personally i am against the easy package to earn the PDU ,alternatively it should be diverse achievements and learning paths including seminars , courses , volunteers work , workshops ...etc. rather than just click and pay.

If PDUs can be purchased, the value of those PDUs are just monetary, not the knowledge. The concept of PDUs was conceived, so the professional continiously improves on his/her knowledge, by working and being active within the Knowledge World. Buying PDUs defeats the concept and there is no intrinsic value in those PDUs. I am a new member here and have a few PDUs, and i am against buying PDUs. It may be worth on your profile, but not in real world of project management.

I've never paid for PDUs. I figure with a bit of planning I have plenty of time to 60 PDUs in a three-year period.
Be wary of any company’s claims that you need their product to learn. They'll say anything to make a profit. I find I learn better on my own using books rather than expensive classes. Right now I’m earning 20 PDUs to apply against my next cycle, and I’m learning far more from 30 minute podcasts than 60 minute webinars.

Do you have a specific place that you find these podcasts? I actually have all of my PDU's for my 2 certifications, but am looking for additional learning opportunities to prepare for the PMI-RMP exam along with other topics I want to learn about.
I love the free webinars offered here and I just started using Lynda. However, I am always looking for more variety.
