Catty co-worker
3 months on the job in a new dept. A female co-worker, who although she didn't know the boss before, came from the same large company (almost went bankrupt due to politics). She grandstands, takes control of meetings (the boss is always late), and tries to pawn her work off on me. She takes advantage of the fact since the dept. is new and our roles are still evolving, to pawn her work off on me, so she can get her project completed and get the glory (she waits until a meeting to act dumb and helpless, so she can ask questions about a metric, and tells the boss "well, he's the metrics person, and since I need a metric defined, I'm asking him").
I don't feel this is right, but the boss is easily manipulated by her, and other females. Since this is a very perception-oriented non-profit organization, how do I turn the tide in my favor without appearing to play politics?

I have similar problems, but am the manager of said people. My pessimistic response is you won't be able to change her, so you must work around it - but that doesn't give you really any help. Nowadays, most people see through that type of behavior, but its a caustic environment that results in it. Don't think I am doing anything more than commiserating with you, but i personally feel you won't be able to do much but stay one step ahead of her.

Dear Anonymous, your catty co-worker takes advantage of you because you let her. And now you want to “turn the tide” without “playing politics”..? If you think cattiness is hard to deal with, how about incompetence, dishonesty, or arrogance..? Be the quiet professional. Do your job, and do it well. Don’t engage in politics, and don’t let people take advantage of you. You might go to Google and search on, “books on assertiveness”. You will find a number of great books.
