Insurance Company PM

If I were to be PM for an insurance company, what kind of projects would I be doing? I understand that this is a general purpose PM, so I am at a loss as to what you would be expected to do. I have a broad IT and financial background. I do software, infrastructure, security, and compliance and I have an MBA so I wonder what I would get hit with in an interview.

If the position is within IT, you should be fine with your listed experience.

Insurance really is no different than other areas, there will probably be many in-house applications to support and enhance, new initiatives, etc.

PM is PM regardless of the sector. The ability to adapt quickly to your settings, ask questions ... all that good stuff. There will be plenty of SME's to leverage.

Not sure if this helps, but feel feel free to ask follow up questions.

I do agree with Andrews point of view. Project Management is the same everywhere but having some technical experience within the field is an asset.

Hello Robert, typically the panel would be more interested in knowing the kind of projects you handled in past and how well you managed them. Your reply to them will ensure the suitability to the project they want you to be in.

Do not bother about kind of projects at this time. Just be more focused on your PM experience.

Good Luck!!

Only one comment, based on my experience.

I went to a job interview for a PM in an insurance company after screen call, when I arrived at the face to face interview, where the only moment that they explained the REAL job and project description.

For them, the project manager will be the responsible for, engage new client (it means sales rep position), engage old clients (Account manager), and track them...more like customer service or admin position.

Hope that you'll be luckier than me, because I wasted time in the interview.

My tip, they will be interested in what kind of project you led before, but REMEMBER, you should ask also about the role and the project that you'll manage if you´ll be hired.

Keep us posted.

This is excellent information. I had this nagging feeling that I did not have enough information. Your tip is the answer to my question. What is it that they wanted me to do. That was what I did not know. Even if it was multiple smaller projects, they still have some idea of what they need to do, and knowing that, I could tailor the specific areas of my resume to illustrate my abilities.

Might be helpful to do informational interviews with other PM or internal staff to find out more about culture, projects, work environment etc. Your core, technical and business skill-sets should be highlighted along with ability to work in with different business areas. Good luck.
