What are tips and suggestions for Project Management in a consensus based team?
Network:236

Japan is a consensus based society and the entire work culture here works on the basis of consensus, so the decision making is often very slow and takes a long time to get all stakeholders on the same page.

Are there any tips or suggestions that Project Managers need to keep in mind to help in this kind of a setup?

Ram,

My experience with Japanese was somehow different. I worked with Japanese companies for 5 years and found them very efficient in decision making. I shared my PM experience with them through a blog I wrote a while ago:

Hi Rami,

I read your article and found it interesting. While it lists down the character attributes of Japanese, it does not answer my query in terms of how to make fast decisions in a consensus based culture. It would be good if you could highlight one or two difficult decisions you guys had to make and the challenges involved in it and how you managed to reach the decision alongwith the Japanese colleagues. That would be really useful.

Thanks,
Ram
