Tailoring the processes as per you organization and project needs is important. Also, the processes are followed differently in various organizations. So, you need to choose the processes which are more relevant for the project and execute them.

Adjust and utilize as the needs dictate. Plan around pre-determined bucket sizes as defined by chosen criteria with specified processes, deliverables, and documentation. Selection process can be simplified with a checklist pathway matrix.

Each people in this world follow project management process from the time they wake up to the time they return to bed. Each organization in this world follows project management process too. The point is: formal or informal? in the PMI`s way or any other organization or standard?. With that into consideration, if organizations want to implement some kind of formality regarding project management then they have to take into consideration; 1-the genesis must be a strategical reason. Strategy is the way the organization answer the environmental stimulus is order to achieve its objectives. Fron the strategy the organization defines the functions/process to answer the environment and the business unit where the functions/process will be located. Here is where the size of the organization will be impacted. 2-organizational objectives (which determines the strategy) will vary depending on the organization life cycle. So, if the organization is inside the growth phase into the organizatinal life cycle forget about to implement some kind of formality because the main objective is to make money to support the growth.

As my colleagues have stated here, Tailor the project to fit your need

If I was to include the absolutely essential processes out of the 47 in the PMBOK , I would have the following :-

{CREATE PROJECT CHARTER} :- need the purpose of the project, High Level scope and risks and the authorization of the Project Manager to work on the project

{DEVELOP PROJECT MANAGEMENT PLAN} - I will clearly detail how i intend to run the project and achieve it's objectives

{DEFINE SCOPE} - Need to know what exactly your project is delivering . can be a single User Requirements specification document describing what is to be delivered

{DEVELOP SCHEDULE } - you must have timelines , milestones, resources and you can have a Microsoft Project Schedule capturing all that .

{ IDENTIFY RISKS} - You must have a Risk Register outlining all of the project risks

{IDENTIFY STAKEHOLDERS} - Know who the stakeholders are on your project if you are to achieve the objectives

{MANAGE COMMUNICATIONS} - encapsulating Communication methods and Models - Interactive or Push Pull Communications; keep your stakeholders informed

{PERFORM INTEGRATED CHANGE CONTROL} - prevention of scope creep is a must on the project . Have a Change control board authorizing any changes to scope

{DETERMINE BUDGET} - Your project must have a budget and you have to determine what it is

{CONTROL QUALITY} - You must be able to inspect, test and qualify that your product is fit for purpose.

{ACQUIRE PROJECT TEAM} cannot do a project without a team

{CONDUCT PROCUREMENT} Need to buy goods and services from Vendors , if its an external vendor or subcontractor

These I think , are the most important 12 Processes in any Tailored Project . My colleagues may think of some other important ones
