I am consulting with an organization that attempting its first offshore agile development project, the organization is fairly experienced with Agile in US projects.

personally, from my offshore development experience, I have a long list of issues that include team co-location, the time difference (11.5h), cultures, languages, understanding client problems, skills set.

Any word of wisdom on how to conduct and manage an offshore SCRUM project?

I am working in this type of environments from 25 years ago. Working offshore has the same challenges no matter the approach you use. And no matter the approach you use the first thing to do is to understand if the organization is ready (analyzing the enteprise architecture).

Thanks

What do you mean by agile? Is there a particular framework you are looking to leverage? Each has it's own nuances and best practices.

If you are using Scrum, have the SM imbedded with the team. You may have them be part of a scrum of scrums with an on-shore group but they need to be with the team.

If you are doing Kanban, you probably have a coach, same story.

No matter the flavor of agile you are using one of the requirements for success is that the team be self-organizing. In other words self-managing. Autonomy is a key ingredient in successful agile work.
