I haven't set up a PMO, but I've worked at a company where the PMO failed and rebooted, several times. One important thing to keep in mind is that unless people in the company want a PMO, it may be seen as an obstacle to getting work done. You want to be seen as an organization that adds value, not one that gets in the way or creates more bureaucracy than work.

Thanks Aaron, Sometimes its important to know the barriers before we begin working. well we have started researching on PMO initiative and would be conveyed to the team members as well. And there always remains certainty of resistance to change, and we have to overcome in possible way for a good cause....

You have many question to answer before you start anything.
First what kind of PMO?
Do you have a sponsor in the C-suite?
Look the practice area on PMO, like Liana suggested.

Yes sir, I came to know about the depth of PMO while researching. PMO at my organization is sponsored by senior management.

I have setup multiple PMOs in lot of companies. Key is: you have to perform an strategic analysis first. Strategy will define the functions/process the organization must implement to answer environmental stimulus. Some could be functions/process related to project management. Then, the organization must decide if those functions/process deserve to be located into a new business unit or not (for example by opening a new office named PMO). If you do not follow this path you will fail. Believe me. The reason to implement project management process and to open a PMO to locate them must be the solution to a business need. The business need appears when needs of putting strategy into action appears. The method you can use to understand if your organization is ready or not after deciding the PMO will be open is this I follow and I wrote in a paper that was published by the IIBA and the PMI as "best practice". Perhaps it helps you:https://www.projectmanagement.com/blog-pos...-right-solution

I have set up several in-house / virtual / internally sourced / outsourced PMOs. A good thing is to start small and prioritize the two - three areas of most concern to address. In case you need help, please contact me.
