Project Cost tracking in MS project
Network:0
Hi ,

Scenario:

If I have 2 resources working on a 4 week project .
Resource A scheduled for week 1 , week 3
Resource B scheduled for week 2
Resource a & B scheduled for week 4

Question:

WRT project cost MS project will cost based on resources scheduled. In real world these are employees who will be paid their regular salary.

HOW DO I ACCOUNT FOR THE RESOURCE COST FOR THE PERIODS THAT THEY ARE NOT ASSIGNED TO ANY TASKS?

Thanks in advance

Most any project planning/scheduling tool will provide only the costs associated with the project and project tasks. The costs are driven from the tasks and costs of the resources. If you have to show idle time as a cost of your project, then I would instead find a way to get some productive work to that resource to accelerate the schedule. Or have those resources work on another project when not working on this one. That would make more sense to me. However, if you just have no choice, then you can create a task in your plan during the timeframe in which those resources are idle. You can call it "idle time" or something like that. The project plan doesn't care what you call it... but it will calculate the cost of the real tasks and the idle time.

Is there any dependency between task performed by these two resources, if they are independent then you should account for idle time and communicate this to finance and Sr. Mgt or make resource work on productive task? This is very typical scenario in any project, at least this is what I have seen my pervious projects.

Hi

Scenario:

A project commenced without a realistic cost estimate and methodology on how to track its budget and now it is faced with several unanswered questions about what money is for what and how was it used. After a while, i however discovered that each an estimate was attached to each summary task without detailed sub-tasks / WBS, no connection between each planned budget and the resources on the project.

Knowing that the project can't be estimated talk-less of tracking without planned resource, what other alternative can one use to plan and subsequently track budget on this project?

Your views and suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I would suggest to use for each resource different Calendar. Each resource by the other
will be paid according contract and converted the payment in daily basis.
