Electronic Monitoring
Network:1364

Team members have become more cautious about internet usage because they believe their behavior might be monitored by the organization, especially in healthcare sectors where privacy and security is paramount.

What forms of electronic monitoring would you be in favor of at work?
What can managers do to effectively communicate to team members and make them more comfortable?

The best way to understand the progress and performance of a team is f2f communication, in regular short time intervalls. Put the emphasis on mentoring, not monitoring. Hepl people to solve problems by themselves. Often, by just letting them talk about the issues the solution "comes as a present". In no co-located teams it is often very difficult to do it like this. Then tools come into play like Jira, but I can only advice to not let this tools being the only communication channel. It is always the second best resolution.

No monitoring. Is like the "Pesticide Paradox" in software quality assurance. That is because time ago we started a BYOD (Bring your own device) initiative to integrate people devices to their daily work. It does not mean that we are not working on security (all type of security).

I hear you Sergio.
In healthcare industry use of internet should be restricted, because data breach can put an organization at risk . As per the records the most expensive data breaches occur in the United States and Germany.

Anish -

So long as a company has a documented information security policy that indicates what they will/won't be doing with your online activity, then it's the responsibility of the individual to decide whether or not they wish to work in that organization.

I expect that anything I am accessing or entering when I use a company's computing assets (physical computers or network bandwidth) may be logged, monitored, analyzed and archived.

When it comes to appropriate usage of specific tools for team collaboration, beyond the guidelines or policies provided by a company, the team should be supported in developing ground rules to avoid confusion or expectation gaps down the line.

Kiron I agree on this.
I think involving employees in the decision to create monitoring system will allow for common ground in developing principles that are acceptable to both sides.

Like Kiron, I expect that anything I do with company assets is monitored.

Thank you @Anish. The poiint is: mostly in the actual world you can not restrict anything. You always has a worm whole. That is the reason I refer the "pesticide paradox" that exists when people talk about quality assurance in software (in the genesis) and it is used for other domains. My actual work place worked a lot on all regarding things like you have stated. I was part of the group that leads all the movement. I am not talking about all must be letting go to free will.

Amish,

Like Stéphane and Kiron on company provided equipment I expect full monitoring. Employe need to be inform of the corporate policy on the subject.

Also a clear policy on personal equipment inside the corporate premises.

Vincent,
I agree that employees should be informed about the policy in place.
