(Unions do not happen, they are caused by management) Do you agree?

And why both managers and unions want grievance procedures.

Forget about lot of things we can argue about this topic for a moment. Unions are needed. Unions could help to get balance with organization´s Top Level Management. From the point of view or management you always need to talk and negotiate with one or two persons instead of hundred of people.

Absolutely right but some mills which don't have union can perform well too but they do have MAC committee to meet with upper management

Unions are a necessary evil, figuratively speaking.

Germany's economy would not be so strong if they would not have unions. Every stock listed company has 50% of directors elected from employees, mostly from unions. Unions provide much needed cognitive diversity in Boards and provide a regulative for the social divide, growing in most western countries.

Project-wise I mostly enjoyed having unions and working councils as stakeholders, because they lend me power in my political struggles.

That's very true and in the west we already have gone through that stage, now it looks like it should be coming in China and few other Asian countries.

Riyadh -

While historically unions came into existence to protect the interests of employees against negative management practices, there have been some more recent instances of large unions attempting to organize staff within well functioning, well managed companies with a resulting detrimental outcome. I'm not saying this is a common scenario but as with everything else, we can't look for absolutes.

As far as the need for grievance procedures, once you have any type of contract whether that's a labor contract or a product/services contract, there needs to be a claims administration process to provide consistency in managing claims from either side of the contract.

Yes Kiron, I know grievance procedures must present in each contract but I like to hear more other reasons if you please elaborate on that.
