I have a large project that is broken down into 6 smaller project. Each team has a project plan. Any advice how to monitor key milestones without creating a massive consolidated project plan? How to monitor if a group falls behind?

Why would you not want a consolidated plan? It would help as the sub projects will have inter dependancies, in this case. With out the master plan, you'll be spending more time to get to the actual status.
