Is it really important to a PMP certified Project Manager to be a Domain Expert or have to be knowledge of respective domain.
Can a PMP certified Project Manager find his/her career in other domains (other than his/her previous experience)?
e.g. Can change from Automotive to IT, Aerospace to Automotive or vice-versa etc?

This has been discussed lot of times into this forum. Please search for those discussions. That is my recomendation.

It has to do with the importance and nature of the project. Generally you need to have the same project experience to be qualified for project manager role. If you can convince the project sponsor/authorities to give you an opportunity in a project of a new field, you enhance the chance of your acceptance in the new field.

Do you need to be certified in anything to have the ability to be a domain expert in that domain? You might need the credential for others to consider that you might be a domain expert.

Getting your PMP does not guarantee you will be able to change fields easily. It might help get you an interview, but it's up to you to convince the interviewers that they should hire you.

Most recruiters in the States won't even consider you unless you have some experience in a particular domain. Even relatively close experience won't qualify. For example, my Pharmaceutical experience won't get me an interview managing projects in the Healthcare domain, even though both are rooted in biological science.

Yes, this subject has been discussed a lot but in summary: Expert - No but Knowlegeable - Yes.

I concur with Eric on this. In my experience it's important to have knowledge in that respective domain.
