What would project managers on Mars need to add to their PM toolkit?

A really good space suit yeah, but what else in terms of skills to effectively manage projects in a hostile, unforgiving and extremely risky environment? I would say 100% mastery of risk management techniques and response plans.

Sante -

Exceptional people skills - could you imagine the greater impacts of a team member losing their cool?

I'd also add vigilance in testing all assumptions.

Oh yeah, and I'd want Matt Damon to be part of my team if MacGuyer wasn't available!

Good call Kiron about exceptional people skills. Also Matt can help us eat when all goes south.

Rami, if they paid him enough ;-)

Actually, one of my favorite Mars films is "The last days on Mars" where I think Liev Schreiber displayed the ideal management skills to get through.

Rami,
Scrolling down the inputs I was thinking the same thing while agreeing with Sante. EQ is one of the most important tools when dealing with a pressure cooking environment, followed by the ability to alter your approach efficiently.

@ Sante, absolutely have to manage the risks, followed by stakeholder management with skilled communication like your title.

An important component of communication Kevin.

Some excellent responses, already.

I would also add a cross-skilled team and the ability to change approaches at the drop of a hat.

The risks of the unknowns, especially for pioneering projects, would be very high. So more than adequate risk management skills, as well.

Karan, cross-skills is an excellent one because I imagine all of the team will need not ony PM skills but management, leadership, scientific (in one of more disciplines), medical (first aid), and the list goes on.

William, yes EQ will have to be on a par with IQ I believe. Being one of a handful of people on the planet with possibly no return mission would involve major self maturity and emotional assessment.
