Project HEADWAY: Yes, You Can Deviate From the Process

Processes emerge because there is a perception that they work. Sometimes this is shaped by expert opinion. Sometimes it is because of “best practices.” In many instances they respond to executive whims and desires.

In a perfect world, processes work reasonably well most of the time. Placing that statement in context, a process would ideally be relevant roughly 9 times out of 10. Pragmatically, most real-world processes are more frequently less relevant. In other words, there are a lot of times when the processes that we say we use don't actually support or apply to the challenges we are in reality facing.

There are also times when what is normally prescribed is not just inappropriate, but may actually undermine what needs to be accomplished. Knowing when to deviate from process—and how—is one of the most important skills for project managers to learn.

In this webinar, Mark Mullaly explores the value and relevance of process, as well as the circumstances where we need to adapt, evolve or deviate from the practices as they exist. He explores the basis for how processes are defined, how they evolved, and how we practically engage with them. Most importantly, he identifies the circumstances where established processes get in the way, and strategies and approaches by which to engage in responsible deviation.

If you live with process, if you occasionally question the relevance of process, and especially if you wonder why people sometimes don't follow the process, you'll want to tune in to this webinar.
