Define Work Breakdown Structure
The WBS is a de rigeur in projectized organizations involving very mature industries such as manufacturing & construction.
However, several relatively newer industries don't leverage the WBS enough.
I have both implemented the WBS in all my projects AND coach client PMs in using interactive sessions to build WBSs for their projects.
These sessions actually become team-building tools!

Set Expectations
Many PMs get forced into accepting "impossible" targets for fear of either losing the PM position on the project or even their jobs.
This has disastrous effects.
Once the team realizes that success is impossible, members practically stop trying!
It is better to deliver the bad news that the target is impossible upfront rather than later.
"Underpromising & Overdelivering" has been my mantra as often as possible,
Over several years, I've also coached hundreds of PMs on this important principle.

Create Incentives for Teamwork
Many PMs leave it to the performing organizations' HR departments to deal with team incentives and motivation.
However, that is woefully inadequate.
The PM needs to come up with innovative methods to motivate the team.
I have successfully done this on many projects, including techniques like the Fish program, engagging contests & quizzes, etc.
