The conceptual and modularization of project management maturity models is based on the principle of process control. This research was designed to challenge these boundaries to reveal non-process factors. Using two case studies of university projects, the findings indicate that mature undefined projects require non process factors such as: increased customer involvement and a more adaptable organizational environment that enables trust, positive attitude and team motivation. We conclude by discussing how a “big data” approach can support future research into non process areas by uncovering the nature and extent interactions within organizations that underpin project activities.
