Project learning is a vital prerequisite for innovation as it directly contributes to project and organizational capability development. As more organizations become project-based, there is an emergent need to understand how these organizations can overcome challenges of disruptive learning cycles caused by project temporality and employee mobility. Project learning occurs on the individual, team, and organizational level. Individual learning happens through intuiting and interpreting, learning by doing, experiencing using metaphors and cognitive maps. Team learning occurs through the integration of individual learnings, which result in shared understanding and mutual adjustment of mental models. Organizational learning manifests itself in the development of practices, policies, guidelines, and routines for the collective benefit. However, how organizations facilitate the transfer of learning between the individual, project, and organizational levels remains limited. This webinar will present key findings from the PMI sponsored research investigating mechanisms influencing learning flows between individuals, project and the parent organization. The research was guided by the overarching question: “How does project learning occur over time as an interaction across individual, project, and organizational levels?” The webinar will focus on presenting 3 notable contributions from the research that informed project management literature and practice. This research: 1. identified 10 bridging mechanisms for multilevel learning that project-based organizations can utilize to encourage learning from and to projects 2. established that 3 key actors: senior leaders, project managers and project management office play crucial role in activating project learning flows, and engaging individuals, teams and organization to participate in learning efforts. 3. developed a new leadership scale to measure leaders behavior focused on promoting project learning.
When Sound Transit decided to expand the light rail system in Seattle, Washington, USA, it had to find a way to tunnel under the densely populated city without disrupting life above ground. Seattle was the second worst city in the U.S. for time commuters were stuck in traffic. The University Link Light Rail Extension extended the light rail system 3.2 miles (5 kilometers) through underground tunnels providing relief for roadway congestion. The rail line opened months ahead of schedule, and the project closed US$200 million under budget. This project was a finalist for the 2017 PMI Project of the Year Award. The purpose of this webinar is to provide practical experiences from using the PMI Ethical Decision Making Framework (EDMF). The webinar begins with the background and genesis for the EDMF, and an overview of the tool and the steps required. Next, the webinar summarizes the research design, collection and analysis process. Participants were asked identify an ethical dilemma, preferably in a business environment, and use the steps in the tool to evaluate the alternatives. Analysis includes what the participants did well, and what they struggled with. In final parts of the webinar, there are recommendations for further use of the tool as a structured mechanism to stop and think before acting in a rash fashion. This tool, was developed by the PMI Ethics Member Advisory Group (EMAG) which acts as a product leader in creating tools and techniques to facilitate meeting the expectations of the PMI Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. This webinar is applicable to all those working in or related to the project management discipline. This workshop is based on a global survey (>3400), consisting of ten scenarios describing common ethical quandaries and the response that respondents made. Demographic Questions were also included. Participants will have the option to participate by using the polling feature to respond to these situations and observe the ways in which diversity influenced their decisions. Participants will understand the relationship between values, ethics and decision making and recognize the impact that ethnicity, culture and other sociodemographic characteristics have in decisions on ethical issues.
Underperformance is a common threat to megaproject managers and the track record of cost and time overruns in these projects is well documented. While front end planning is important, not all events and scenarios can be foreseen when the project can take several years to complete and may involve many companies and stakeholders. In our research we find that the capacity to adapt to this uncertainty during the life of the project is crucial for megaproject performance but it is often overlooked as a capability. Using a case study of the construction of a US$20 billion dollar project we show that project leaders play an important role in recognizing when a plan needs to change and then navigating the path onto a new project plan without disrupting the delivery of the project.
In 2012, tank AY-102 was found to be leaking nuclear waste. In order to remediate the threat of potential hazardous materials leaking into the environment, the tank needed to be replaced quickly! The Hanford Double Shell Tank AY-102 Recovery Project successfully transferred nuclear waste into a double shell tank for safe storage with no safety issues, ahead of schedule, and US$8.7 million under budget.
