Coordinating Knowledge Work in Multiteam Programs: Findings From a Large-Scale Agile Development Program
Software development projects have undergone remarkable changes with the arrival of agile development approaches. Although intended for small, self-managing teams, these approaches are today used for large development programs. A major challenge of such programs is coordinating many teams. This case study describes the coordination of knowledge work in a large-scale agile development program with 12 teams. The findings highlight coordination modes based on feedback, the use of a number of mechanisms, and how coordination practices change over time. The findings can improve the outcomes of large knowledge-based development programs by tailoring coordination practices to needs over time.

An Anthropological Perspective on the Symbolic Interpretations of the Dutch High Speed Train Megaproject Megaprojects can be perceived as modern symbols; they are crucial for the encapsulation of ideas, attitudes, and beliefs. This webinar explores which exegetical meanings (meaning derived from local interpretations) a megaproject can encapsulate and how this shapes the megaproject’s process. We discuss a longitudinal study of how the Dutch High Speed Train megaproject was executed. The findings show three exegetical meanings of the megaproject which were used for strategic goals, resulting in power struggles, delays, cost overrun, and finally a negative symbol of a failed megaproject.
The Management of Benefits: Opening the Black Box of Benefits and Revealing their Collective Production
In the context of projects, benefits management has recently been attracting the attention of practitioners and researchers alike. Project management practitioners are particularly interested in benefits management to demonstrate the connection between project management and projects benefits. For their part, most researchers aim to explain how to establish this connection, by proposing new conceptual frameworks. Yet, a crucial issue remains under discussed: how benefits management is practiced, in concrete situations, and which challenges practitioners face. Although many organizations are considering adopting formal processes of benefits management, benefits management seems fraught with difficulties when it comes to its deployment and its practice. These challenges have been the focal point of our study, which led us to meet with project management practitioners involved in benefits management in five large-scale organizations.
• At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to: • Understand concepts associated with a principle-based and systemic view of project delivery. • Understand the project delivery landscape and associated delivery approaches. • How these concepts are being incorporated in the PMBOK(R) Guide-Seventh Edition
As Digital Transformation efforts sweep across Government and Corporate America, many enterprises are finding that the results of their Digital Transformation efforts are much less than expected. A recent survey of one hundred Digital Transformation efforts internally measured using various criteria reported thirty percent of those efforts were deemed “successful.” Corporations are finding that a key area of difficulty is analyzing the organization and how it needs to function in the digital world. Analyzing an organization today using standard techniques is little more than looking at the organization chart and “looking” for inefficiencies. In fact, the “traditional” organization chart tells us very little about how the organization actually functions. This webinar will present and describe some innovative techniques that can be used in analyzing how organizations need to address organizational transformation to provide successful digital transformations, beyond just technology change. As a group, these techniques are described as part of B. (Business) I. (Information) O. (Organization) Transformation – BIO Transformation.
