A PMI-funded research study identified how project staff use their knowledge networks to build project capabilities, and how knowledge is transferred, translated and managed in these networks. We also explored the role of networks in providing mutual support for 'members' and as a coordination mechanism for the project. The outcomes of the study will help project staff, and their organizations, to understand practical network design strategies and behaviors to transfer and manage knowledge across and within different project environments.

How Digitalization Affects Project Management – Evidence from Two Case Studies in the Construction Industry
Digital transformation is a phenomenon occurring across sectors and nations, affecting not only technical processes, but also organizational forms and managerial practices. Among them are: (1) project-based organizations (PBOs), common in traditional sectors like the construction industry, and (2) project networks (PNWs), the most favorable form of project organizing in modern service and creative industries. Project management, which is often used as an agent for change, plays a significant role in initiating and implementing digital transformation. To analyze the digital transformation of traditional PBOs and modern PNWs, comparative case studies in the context of commercial construction have been conducted in Sweden and in Germany.

The importance of governance in Portfolios, Programs, and Projects (3P) is reflected in part by the development of standards for governance (PMI, 2016) as well as by the increasing attention being paid to governance in management/academic literature, and in practice. At the same time, organizations increasingly aim to improve their innovation capabilities, enabling them to survive in today’s dynamic, competitive environment. However, there is little guidance in research literature on whether and how 3P governance can be designed to support and promote innovation. The escalating importance of project delivery in organizations, especially for innovation, further highlights the need for better understanding of the relationship between governance, innovation, and success in 3P.

The rise of game-changing technology has spurred a frenzied race for organizations to undertake digital transformation. Project leaders and the project management office (PMO) have a key role to play in this transformation—but only if they’re willing to evolve. Join PMI’s Vasili Lebotesis, Payal Kondisetty and Kelley Hunsberger as they provide highlights from the research conducted in partnership with Accenture, Forbes Insights and Capgemini to learn how organizations are managing the impact of disruptive technologies—and embracing the change that they bring.
You can open numerous books and observe two dozen ways to stand up a PMO. And reviewing PMO maturity model tools will lead you to believe that a more “mature” PMO is better.
