One of the 2017 PMI Award for Project Excellence winners, ICT fitout delivered ‘As a Service’ for 1 William Street, saw Dimension Data develop an industry-first technology solution for the Queensland State Government that has provided a benchmark platform that can be readily applied across all state-owned building into the future. Despite challenges, such as having to deal with a large and diverse subcontract base which introduced complexity and potential cost implications, the project was delivered on time and on budget. The University Health Network (UHN) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada wanted to ensure that patients who are discharged from hospitals receive the necessary support for a successful recovery. In 2014, UHN embarked on a 3-year, CA$955,000 quality improvement initiative which included creating a standardized electronic Discharge Summary for UHN’s 35,000 annual inpatients, detailing their hospital experience and requirements for ongoing care. The program finished on schedule and under budget and was a winner of the 2018 PMI Award for Project Excellence. When Sound Transit decided to expand the light rail system in Seattle, Washington, USA, it had to find a way to tunnel under the densely populated city without disrupting life above ground. Seattle was the second worst city in the U.S. for time commuters were stuck in traffic. The University Link Light Rail Extension extended the light rail system 3.2 miles (5 kilometers) through underground tunnels providing relief for roadway congestion. The rail line opened months ahead of schedule, and the project closed US$200 million under budget. This project was a finalist for the 2017 PMI Project of the Year Award. Digital transformation is a phenomenon occurring across sectors and nations, affecting not only technical processes, but also organizational forms and managerial practices. Among them are: (1) project-based organizations (PBOs), common in traditional sectors like the construction industry, and (2) project networks (PNWs), the most favorable form of project organizing in modern service and creative industries. Project management, which is often used as an agent for change, plays a significant role in initiating and implementing digital transformation. To analyze the digital transformation of traditional PBOs and modern PNWs, comparative case studies in the context of commercial construction have been conducted in Sweden and in Germany.
