Underperformance is a common threat to megaproject managers and the track record of cost and time overruns in these projects is well documented. While front end planning is important, not all events and scenarios can be foreseen when the project can take several years to complete and may involve many companies and stakeholders. In our research we find that the capacity to adapt to this uncertainty during the life of the project is crucial for megaproject performance but it is often overlooked as a capability. Using a case study of the construction of a US$20 billion dollar project we show that project leaders play an important role in recognizing when a plan needs to change and then navigating the path onto a new project plan without disrupting the delivery of the project.

The design of governance systems of collaborative relationships should aim for resolving institutional complexity, which further improves organizational resilience for IOPs. By adopting a sequential qualitative-quantitative approach, we conduct research based on empirical evidence to address the issue of resilience of IOPs under institutional complexities. Consequently, this research broadens the perspectives of earlier studies by proposing a shift from focusing on operational conflicts to institutional conflicts and has identified a dynamic stakeholder engagement strategy toward improved resilience. This novel perspective is better aligned with practical reality and provides a comprehensive theoretical framework of governance for improved resilience in the face of institutional complexity.

An Anthropological Perspective on the Symbolic Interpretations of the Dutch High Speed Train Megaproject Megaprojects can be perceived as modern symbols; they are crucial for the encapsulation of ideas, attitudes, and beliefs. This webinar explores which exegetical meanings (meaning derived from local interpretations) a megaproject can encapsulate and how this shapes the megaproject’s process. We discuss a longitudinal study of how the Dutch High Speed Train megaproject was executed. The findings show three exegetical meanings of the megaproject which were used for strategic goals, resulting in power struggles, delays, cost overrun, and finally a negative symbol of a failed megaproject.
