تعكس أهداف المشروع بشكل عام احتياجات ورغبات أصحاب المصلحة في المشروع، ويجب تنسيق هذه الاحتياجات والرغبات المتنوعة جماعيًا لتجنب التعارض مع أهداف المالك. ويرتبط نجاح المشروع ارتباطًا وثيقًا بالتعاون بين أصحاب المصلحة مع تكامل المعلومات بين الجميع خلال دورة حياة المشروع. وتساعد نمذجة معلومات البناء (BIM) على ترجمة القيمة لدى المالك إلى مشروع ناجح من خلال تمكين تدفق المعلومات المستمر وتقديم منتج عالي القيمة. وتعتبر عملية البناء واحدة من أقدم الصناعات والتى يُنظر إليها على أنها مجموعة من الأنشطة التي تهدف إلى تحقيق ناتج معين. وتشمل عملية الإنشاء على أنواع مختلفة من الفواقد والتي قد تحول المشروع الجيد إلى مشروع سيء، حيث تُوجد الكثير من الفواقد والهدر أثناء عملية البناء والتى قد ترجع إلى سوء التصميم، وسوء المشتريات والتخطيط، وعدم الإستخدام الأمثل للموارد، وبقايا المواد الخام، والتغيرات غير المتوقعة في تصميم المبنى وغيرها. والمصدر الرئيسى لهذه الفواقد هو مشاركة المعلومات دون المستوى الأمثل، وعدم فهم الطبيعة التكرارية لمراحل التصميم المفاهيمية والتخطيطية.
