Functional testing is a type of testing performed to ensure that the system or software conforms to the specifications and/or requirements laid down for it. Functional tests cases should be traceable to requirements.

Why is it required

It is performed to ensure that the functionality of the system or software works as expected; to ensure that the various features provided by the system work the way as they should be.

Examples

Although specific functional testing will depend on the type of specifications and requirements, below are some common examples of Functional Testing:

  • Business Rules
  • Transaction corrections, adjustments and cancellations
  • Administrative functions
  • Authentication
  • Authorization levels
  • Audit Tracking
  • External Interfaces
  • Certification Requirements
