8 Project Management Lessons From Laser Quest

I recently went to a Laser Quest session with my family. We were with a bunch of other people who had also paid for the session, and it was a lot of running around in a slightly darkened room pointing plastic blasters at each other.

We were split into arbitrary teams and given team colors: red and green. Its a noisy environment, but quite good fun—and if you look hard enough, you can find some real-life project management lessons from the experience. Here are eight things I took away that reminded me of how my project management skills are applicable to life outside the office:

1. Set a goal
The goal in Laser Quest is to take out the other team by shooting at their headband. If you get a hit, it registers a point. The objective is to score as many points as possible. It is easy to see if you are on track with the goal because the headband will flash if your hit is on target. When that happens, it stops your opponent from using their blaster for a few seconds so it gives your team an advantage. There were some young kids playing too, including ours—so the rules are simple and the goal very easy to understand.

Takeaway: Keep your project goals simple.

2. Have a strategy
