I just sat through an evaluation with my boss, and it didn’t go well. I think I’m a good leader, but some of the people on my team are not good employees. But after this discussion with my own manager, I wonder if I’ve misjudged my own behavior. How can I tell if I’m a bad leader? And if I am, how can I fix it​?

A. It’s impossible to blame the behavior of a team on the leadership of the project manager or team lead on a project. Sit down with the people falling down on their delivery, causing problems with the innerworkings of the team, or not measuring up to your expectations. Ask them to work harder for the sake of the project.

B. Maybe a fresh way to evaluate your own behavior would be to look at what is happening with your team and your projects. Then if there are issues, try to trace back and see if there is anything in your own leadership behavior that typically causes those types of problems.

C. With the challenges of today’s workplace—such as employees feeling cut off due to working at home, and no real person-to-person exchange of what is expected of them—it is almost impossible to get a high-powered team that can deliver like it once could when everyone was face to face. You…
